PAUL POTTS SUPER STAR

26 06 2007

A friend of mine once said that he always wanted to try playing golf but never got around to it. I replied that if he couldn’t spare some time for it than he should just forget about it. I myself wanted to try my hand in mountain climbing but work and family always got in the way. But then he said, “What if I turn out to be good at it?”

That question came to mind when I saw the performance of Paul Potts in the British talent show, Britain’s Got Talent. The show is patterned after the popular American Idol and as a matter of fact, has Simon Cowell as one of the judges, along with British actress Amanda Holden and author Piers Morgan. When Paul Potts walked on stage wearing, as Piers said later, “a terrible outfit” no one really knew what was coming. The look on their faces when this unassuming middle aged, mobile phone salesman from South Wales first opened his mouth to sing Nessun Dorma was priceless.

Paul Potts eventually won the contest and Simon Cowell wasted no time in signing Potts to a 1 million pound record deal with Syco Record label.

As one of the judges said after Paul’s first audition, “We have a case of a little lump of coal here that is going to turn into a diamond.”

A constant target of bullies in his younger years, Paul had issues about self confidence and was really having second thoughts whether or not to enter the competition. But he still chose to do it and the rest is history.

I don’t know if my friend has taken his first golf swing yet but I’m definitely going to give mountain climbing a try. Thanks Paul!
